I’ve often preached that playing video games is exercise for the mind. It helps build mental dexterity and sharpens reaction times. Finally someone else is listening… or maybe just having the same thoughts as me.

Allstate Insurance is working on a program to give discounts to people who spend X number of hours playing video games.

With that being said, all the time I put in kicking ass on CoD4 should net me free insurance.

About a month and half ago I wrote a post about how video game developers need to step up (click here to read it). Well, to they still haven’t stepped.

Though I’ve pretty much given up getting excited about new game releases, I am starting to see a small sliver of hope (a very small one) in the new James Bond game, “Quantum of Solace”…. Why? As, no shooter since Call of Duty: Modern Warfare has been worth a crap… Activision is using the Call of Duty game engine on this new James Bond game. So, it’s got potential…

I know, I’m setting my self up again for another disappointment.

Check out this Super Mario World map hack (dubbed Asshole Mario World).  I would have thrown my controller across the room in frustration… shit, I get frustrated just watching it!

Also, see the related videos for more levels.

Everyone agrees that Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare is one of the greatest games made to date, and yes, it deserves the “Game of the Year” and other awards it has received… but, has it set the bar too high?

As an active video gamer, I enjoyed when new video games came out, but lately I find myself not even getting remotely excited about them.  I first picked up CoD4 in December of 2007, and have been playing it almost exclusively since.  I remember getting excited as Army of Two came out, thinking to myself that finally something will be able to get my attention away from CoD4, but I was sadly dissappointed.  EA did a great job marketing the game, the online videos and trailers were great, but the game really failed to deliver.  Then there was Rainbow Six: Las Vegas 2… RSLV 1 was OK, and I thought (hoped) that maybe the RSLV2 dev team may have realized that CoD4 is so bad ass that they needed to step up, and once again I was dissapointed.

After what seems to be an eternity of delays, Haze just came out.   Were these delays strategic?  Perhaps Ubisoft felt that there is no way Haze can compete with CoD4, that they delayed it so long in hopes that CoD4 gamers would get bored and switch to the next new thing?   I don’t know, just speculating.

I’ve played the Haze demo, and the story mode I previewed was just ok, I like the concept behind the game, and to their defense, I am usually just playing in mutiplayer mode, and that demo didnt include that mode.  In fact, I never play the CoD4 story mode anymore, and perhaps Haze’s multiplayer may be good… but seriously, I’m not getting my hopes up.

In fact, releases of new video games in general are not getting my hopes up anymore, and thats a bad thing.  EA, Insomniac, Guerilla, Ubisoft, Incognito, etc, STEP THE FUCK UP!  I mean seriously, look at CoD4, see what they did right, look at what made their game so successful, and then do something similar, if not take it to the next level!  In my personal opinion, I dont see why any game manufacturer would even consider releasing a product that may be inferior to CoD4.

Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 2, Battlefield: Bad Company, Resistance 2, SOCOM: Confrontation are slated to be out somewhat soon, lets just hope they’ve done their homework, because someone really needs to do something to get me excited about new games again!

Though I think it’s kinda cool… what makes a person think of doing something like this?

Here’s two online series that I find hilarious (there’s several episodes in each):

For you old school video games, here’s Street Fighter: The Later Years.

For you fans of the TV show The Office, here’s High Times: Editorial Office.
